Whoa, I just noticed that I passed 5k hits recently! Considering I originally joined DA to more easily collect art and only tentatively started posting stuff, that's awesome!

It's also clearly cause for a feature. Let's see... what shall I do for today's theme... how about sunsets & sunrises? I have a weakness for the things, and have collected many a deviation featuring them. Here are just a few of the awesome ones found on this site. Some of them are natural, and some are "man-made" through the use of filters, photo-manip, or straight out art:

Okay, so that was way more than I meant to include, but how could I choose?!

If you know of more beautiful sunrises and sunsets, your own or someone else's, feel free to comment with a link!

Yeah, besides the cost of travel, our cats have some medical problems and special raw diets, so leaving them is difficult at best. Mostly we do day trips because of that. :)

Oh my! What are your cats suffering from? You know, boarding cats at a good vet's is cheaper than you might think. Failing that, if you live in a suburb or city, there's probably a cat adorer on your street who would step forward to give you a break.

I'm about to make a pot of homemade soup, but when I'm done with that, I'm going to get back to work on a long and painful letter to a pet store chain regarding my two missing cats and the one that suffered horribly and had to be put down... Long story. I might post the letter in a journal sometime soon. In my opinion, the fault lies in the pet chain's kitten aquisition practices. They claim not to, but I know for a fact that they take kittens from homeowners (backyard breeders).

One has feline herpes (which means the other might too), and they both have really bad allergies (the one that might not have herpes has asthma). The only thing we found that helped with the asthma was to switch them to raw food, and dealing with that takes some effort to do right, which I'm hesitant to ask someone else to do. Other than perhaps a friend from Massachusetts who knows our cats well; I'd probably ask her to come down and house-sit if it came to that. Also, since our cats have vaccine allergies, they only have the bare minimum necessary ones (rabies and one other), so most places wouldn't take them.

Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that. Yeah, I won't buy animals from pet stores because I'm not happy about the places they get their animals. For me it's either a rescue shelter or a dedicated breeder if I want cats (the latter because I have strong cat allergies, and have an easier time with Cornish Rex cats).

I would be interested to read the letter, so I hope you post it. I'm just sorry that writing it is bringing up the pain again.

Cats are carnivores. Raw meat?

I knew cats could have asthma, but I didn't know cats could get herpes. Is it worse than herpes in humans? Poor things.:/ My best friend used to swear by Rexes. They're so funny looking.:) I'm fine with cats, but I'm allergic to dogs. My remaining cat is a domestic long hair (a mutt).

This was my first and last time buying from a pet store. The shelters just didn't have any kittens at the time and once we'd made a decision to adopt some kittens, the kids were impatient! All four of them!

Thanks, yes, I'm still not finished it... I never want to see another animal suffer like that again. It could have been avoided.

Yep, raw meat. In fact, they're just at this moment munching away on a ground up mixture of turkey organs, meat, and bones. It was a last-ditch effort to find something to curb Selene's constant asthma, since nothing else had worked, and I was shocked by the difference it made. (I'd read all the literature on the studies that show cats' systems aren't designed to take full nutrition from either cooked meat or non-meat additives as opposed to raw meat, but it was hard to imagine it being that much of a difference.) Both cats' fur is noticeably thicker and silkier; Cahlash doesn't have digestive trouble any more; they have more energy; and Selene's asthma attacks went from daily to no more than weekly! It's more expensive than boxed cat food and more trouble to deal with, but we don't have to take them to the vet's nearly so often, so we save a lot of money and worry there.

For cats, feline herpes is a virus of the eyes, so it's like having a constant head cold that particularly makes your eyes weepy. There's no cure, but we give Cahlash lysine in his food twice a day, and that's made a huge difference. Now his eyes don't tend to be weepy, and he's only sniffly and sneezy occasionally.

The funny thing about Rexes is that once you get used to them, it's "normal" cats that look funny. *grin*

I can understand the impatience to have kittens. Kittens are awesome!! :D
